How VAT works in Bahrain

Bahrain introduced VAT on 1 January 2019 at 5% under Decree-Law No. 48 of 2018, then raised the standard rate to 10% on 1 January 2022 under Law No. 33 of 2021. Most goods and services are taxed at 10%; a list of basic food items, education, healthcare, exports outside the GCC, and the first sale of new residential property are zero-rated. Local financial services and residential leases are exempt.

Worked example

A Manama supplier invoices a client BHD 1,000.000 (excl. VAT). The 10% VAT line is BHD 100.000, so the invoice total is BHD 1,100.000.

Quick formulas

Add 10% VAT: net × 1.10 = inclusive. Extract: inclusive ÷ 1.10 = net; VAT = inclusive − net.
